PPD preferences

PPD (PostScript® Printer Description) files contain information specific to the output device to which Print Console is connected. They include options that are available and features that are supported by the output device, such as fonts, line screens, offset margins, supported page sizes, and so on. PPD files are:

See Virtual Punch Location parameters in the Media tool for information about PostScript Printer eXtension (PPX) files, which are supplements to PPD files.

PPD file path

If you do not want Print Console to generate a PPD file when you create or modify a media size, leave this box blank. It can be set to blank by pressing Delete on the keyboard.

When this parameter is changed to a nonblank value, the PPD file will be created when you click Apply. Afterwards, the PPD file will be recreated after every successful save in the Media Tool.

If you want Print Console to automatically generate a PPD file when you create or modify a media size:

  1. Browse to select a file path to the location where the PPD file will be saved. Print Console will display a message if you have selected a location that is not suitable.

  2. Select or create a file name.

Whenever you click Apply in the Media Tool, Print Console creates a PPD file (or overwrites an existing file) in that location.

RIP orientation

Select Landscape or Portrait.

Important: The orientation you select here must match the orientation in your RIP software. For example, if Prinergy is your RIP software, you must select Landscape, or you may get an output that is rotated on the media. Refer to your RIP workflow software documentation to determine whether your RIP is portrait or landscape orientation.

Imposition software uses the RIP orientation parameter in the PPD file to:

  • Determine the correct orientation for the media

  • Place the virtual punch coordinate. For Landscape orientation, the imposition software places the virtual punch on the x dimension along the drum. For Portrait, it places the virtual punch on the y dimension along the drum.

Default resolution

Select the default resolution (in dots per inch) for the output device:

  • RIP Default

  • 1200

  • 2400

Fix LaserWriter same size bug

When a Macintosh LaserWriter driver encounters media with the same size, it picks the first medium with the correct size that it encounters, which may not be the medium that you selected.

This fix adds a very small number to each media size so that no two media sizes are exactly the same size. This size deviation is very small (less than 1/10,000 of a point), which does not affect imposition accuracy.

Select Yes to enable this fix. Select No to disable it.

Include standard PPD media types

If enabled, this parameter configures the PPD file to include standard page sizes that have been defined for printers, such as letter, legal, tabloid, and A4. They are provided for the convenience of desktop applications only.

Select Yes to enable this parameter. Select No to disable it.
