Performance of an SGI tertiary server using SAMBA is very slow

Product

Prinergy, SAMBA

Operating System

Windows 2000

Symptoms

The performance of your SGI Prinergy tertiary server using SAMBA is very slow.

Cause

This is a known issue with SGI servers used as Prinergy tertiary servers.

Solution

Modifying the protocol in the SAMBA configuration file (smb.conf) may improve the network throughput. To modify the protocol, change the following settings (indicated in bold):

[global]
netbios name = xxxxx
server string = yyyyy
security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *ew*password:* %n\n *e-enter*new*password:* %n\n
max log size = 50
protocol = LANMAN2
max protocol = LANMAN2
min protocol = LANMAN2
os level = 0
local master = No
comment = Samba %v
create mask = 0766
force directory mode = 0755
block size = 65536
print command = /usr/samba/bin/sambalp %p %s %U %m

Note: The Kodak Response Center will be unable to provide anything other than basic troubleshooting information about this problem, in addition to the above configuration change. There may be other factors that contribute to the slow network throughput.

Note: Sales representatives with customers who plan to use an SGI server as a Prinergy tertiary should let the customers know of the possibility of this throughput problem. To diagnose network performance issues, customers can order Network Analysis Service (501A10640) from the Kodak professional services group.
