Symptoms |
You are repeatedly asked for the username and password when attempting to access a network share that is being shared using SAMBA, regardless of whether you enter a correct username and password combination. |
Cause |
SAMBA is configured to use plain-text passwords and you are using a version of Windows that is more recent than Windows NT4 Service Pack 3. Any version of Windows NT newer than Windows NT 4 Service Pack 3 will not accept plain-text passwords without hacking the registry. |

Solution |
Change SAMBA to use encrypted passwords. If SAMBA is using USER-level security, add the appropriate username/password combinations to the smbpasswd.txt file using the smbpasswd command line utility. If SAMBA is using SERVER-level security, ensure the password server is set to the appropriate machine (normally the Prinergy Primary Server) and ensure that the appropriate users exist on the UNIX machine. Also, ensure those users have access to the directories at the UNIX security level. |
