Brisque Application Note
PDF & APR Workflow on the Brisque

In order for the Brisque to support the PDF APR workflow the ScitexDistillerStartup.ps file must be installed on your Mac / PC.  This file must be installed before you actually distill PostScript files in order to create PDF files that are to be processed on the Brisque.

Both PC and MAC users should download the ScitexDistillerStartup.ps file and then proceed to the following section, Enabling the ScitexDistillerStartup.ps File.

Enabling the ScitexDistillerStartup.ps File

The following section instructs you how to configure the startup file required for the PDF APR workflow.

Before continuing, make sure the Distiller application is not running.

Macintosh users:
Windows 95/NT users:

After the ScitexDistillerStartup.ps file has been copied to your system, you can launch the Acrobat Distiller application to create a PDF from a Composite PS with a PSImage (.e) file.

Note:  To upgrade your Acrobat Distiller 3.0 application to version 3.02, access the following website: www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/acrdistiller.html, and download the upgrade patch according to your working platform (PC/Mac). Installation instructions for this patch are also available from this site.

Suggested Workflow

The following diagram illustrates the suggested workflow process for applying the PDF APR workflow. Note that no change in the creation of your page layout is required (e.g. place the PSImage (.e) file inside Quark (or any other DTP application) page and create a composite PS file).

Input a Composite PostScript file with a Low Res. file
(.e) created by any of the following applications:

  • PhotoShop PSImage Exporter 3.x
    (supports CMYK & Spot CT*)
  • Brisque Translator (for LW APR*)
  • Designer Tool Kit™

From the Distiller menu command, click
Job Options then open the Advanced tab then select the Preserve OPI Comments option.
This must be done before you use Acrobat Distiller to creat the PDF file.

(For general information regarding the Acrobat Distiller application setup, Version 2.2 users refer to the 'Adobe Acrobat Distiller Guidelines' section, pages 3-4 in the Brisque Option Update.pdf.

Version 2.8 users refer to Brisque User Guide, RIP chapter 18

The PDF file can be RIPped on the Brisque directly in the composite mode, or can be exported back to PostScript using the Acrobat Exchange ExportPS** plug-in.

For either option, make sure that you define the Hi-Res path.

* For information on how to work with Spot CT & LW APR in the PDF workflow refer to the ‘Known Limitations’ section in this document.

** Mac Users:

The ExportPS plug-in (freeware) for Adobe Acrobat Exchange (Mac version) is automatically installed when you first install AdobeAcrobat Exchange 3.x on the Macintosh. (There is no need to download any file from the web).

To access the ExportPS plug-in, from the File > Export menu command, select Postscript or EPS.

PC Users:

Download the ExportPS plug-in from the following Adobe Site:

http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/LIBRARY/4f26.htm.   Then place the uncompressed file, in the Acrobat Exchange Plug-In folder.  After you launch the Acrobat Exchange application the ExportPS plug-in is then available from the File > Export > Postscript or EPS menu command.

Note: PostScript files created in Adobe Exchange using the Print command, are not supported in the PDF APR workflow.
