Downloading elements to your desktop

How you download elements from a project or library to your desktop varies depending on whether you are using a Web browser or Synapse Desktop.

In a Web browser | In Synapse Desktop

In a Web browser

  1. Select the elements that you want to download.

  2. From the Operations Palette, click the button that corresponds to the desired type of download:

  3. In the Download dialog box, the Directory to download to box specifies the location to which the elements will be downloaded. Click Choose Directory to select a different location if desired.

  4. If you are downloading low-resolution JPEGs, select the desired resolution.

  5. If you want to overwrite any existing elements in the target location that have the same file names as the elements being downloaded, select Overwrite Existing Files.

  1. Click Download.

A dialog box appears with a progress bar indicating the download progress. Note that if you did not select Overwrite Existing Files, and existing elements in the target location have the same names as the elements being downloaded, the download pauses and the dialog box displays an error message. What do I do next?

  1. Once the download is complete, click Close to close the dialog box.

Copies of each downloaded element appear in the specified location. The originals remain in the project or library.

In Synapse Desktop

There are two ways to download elements in Synapse Desktop.

The first method is to select the elements that you want to download and drag them directly to the target location (for example, onto your desktop). In this case, the download begins automatically, bypassing the Download Elements dialog box. Note, however, that any elements already in the target location that have the same names as the elements being downloaded are automatically overwritten; you are not prompted to confirm that you want to overwrite the files.

The second method, as described below, involves more steps but enables you to specify whether you want to overwrite any existing files in the target location:

  1. Select the elements that you want to download.

  2. From the File menu, select New Download, or click the Download selected items button.

  1. In the Download Elements dialog box, from the Download to list, select Desktop to download the elements to your desktop, or Other to select a different location to which you want to download the elements.

  2. If you want to overwrite any existing elements in the target location that have the same file names as the elements being downloaded, select Replace existing elements. What happens when I select this option?

  1. In the Download type list, select the download format for the elements—Original, Low resolution EPS FPO, or Low resolution JPEG.

  2. If you selected Low resolution JPEG, select the desired resolution in the Resolution list.

  3. Click Download.

A progress bar in the Uploads & Downloads dialog box indicates the download progress. Click the magnifying class next to the progress bar if you want to open the folder where the elements are being downloaded.

If you selected Replace existing elements, any elements in the target location that have the same names as the elements being downloaded are automatically overwritten.

If you did not select Replace existing elements and there are existing elements in the target location that have the same names as the elements being downloaded, all non-conflicting elements are downloaded first, and then the download process pauses. The Uploads & Downloads dialog box appears, displaying an error message. (Note that the dialog box will also display messages for any other errors encountered during the download other than element conflicts.) What do I do next?

Once the download is complete, copies of each downloaded element appear in the specified location. The originals remain in the project or library.
