Thermal3 Command
adc [(hc|npe|act|pbp|ibs|dbp|wlc|rfe|lvdu|lvdl|pbp2|lvdp|lvdn)]

Description A set of 'monitored metrics' is updated every two seconds in the exposure head. The monitor command adc ( for 'Analog to Digital Converter' ) allows users to display the most recent value of these metrics. There are eighty-eight such metrics in the following five general categories:

  • relative humidity
  • voltage
  • temperature
  • current
  • pressure

When the monitor command adc is entered without arguments, all metrics are displayed. Each line displayed includes the hardware board from which the value originated. This will be either the head controller board or one of the various satellite boards. Below is a typical example of a single line from the output of the monitor command adc:

   [ 5] HC Vdsp 1.25 V ... 1.50 1.00 ... . Y
The '5' indicates the index of the metric. This is useful for 'masking' the metric ( explained further below ). The 'HC' indicates that the metric signal originates from the head controller board. The 'Vdsp' is the hardware mnemonic name of the signal. The '1.25 V' is the latest updated value of the metric ( '...' indicates that the satellite board is not installed ). The '... 1.50 1.00 ...' are the fatal high, shutdown high, shutdown low and fatal low thresholds respectively ( '...' indicates that the threshold is not defined ). The '. Y' indicate if the fatal and shutdown thresholds respectively are maskable ( '.' indicates that the corresponding thresholds are not defined ).

An optional argument may be entered on the command line that allows only the metrics for a specific board to be displayed. The specific boards are:

hc Head Controller
npe Nose Piece Electronics
act Actuator
pbp Power Beam Pointing
ibs Internal Beam Balance Sensor
dbp Differential Beam Pointing
wlc Write Laser Controller
rfe Range Finder Electronics
lvdl Light Valve Driver Lower
lvdu Light Valve Driver Upper
pbp2 Integrated PBP, DBP and IBS
lvdp Light Valve Driver Positive
lvdn Light Valve Driver Negative
Other sorting options exist. These are accomplished with separate monitor commands each with their own documentation. For convenience, these monitor commands are listed below, but specific documentation is available through the 'See Also' links.

rh Displays all relative humidity metrics
volt Displays all voltage metrics
temp Displays all temperature metrics
current Displays all current metrics
pressure Displays all pressure metrics
Most of the monitored metrics must stay within certain ranges for the exposure head to be considered 'healthy' in a general sense. Other 'specific' health problems may exist within the exposure head, but they are not considered part of the 'general' system health metrics and are monitored specially by the appropriate firmware subsystem.

Some metrics will trigger a 'shutdown fault' if they exceed the shutdown thresholds. A shutdown fault means that any plot that may be in progress is aborted and all critical subsystems ( such as focus, LDD, LVD, etc. ) are shutdown. Whenever a shutdown fault occurs, the firmware reports which metric is responsible. However, it will not report whether the problem is over range or under range, just out of range. The specifics of the range fault can usually be be determined by using the monitor command adc. A value that is currently outside of its range and not masked will display an exclamation point at the start of its line display; a value that is currently outside of its range and masked will display an asterisk at the start of its line display.

There is a hysteresis band of 10% of the metric range on both the high and low range trip points. This is to prevent continuous re-triggering of the fault when the metric is hovering near a trip point. For example, if a given temperature metric has a shutdown range of 104 C to 116 C, the hysteresis band is 0.10 * ( 116 C - 104 C ) = 1.2 C. If the temperature rises to the upper trip point of 116 C, the resulting fault will not be reset until the temperature falls below 114.8 C. Conversely, if the temperature falls to the lower trip point of 104 C, the resulting fault will not be reset until the temperature rises above 105.2 C. This is the typical methodology followed for all monitored metrics.

Some metrics will trigger a 'fatal fault' if they exceed the fatal thresholds. A fatal fault means that the exposure head will either reset itself or request the host disable power to the exposure head.

Note that some metrics either do not implement the shutdown and / or fatal thresholds or do not permit the shudown and / or fatal thresholds to be maskable. Although the mechanics are in place to allow all metrics to be maskable, for some metrics masking is irrelevent and has no effect.
