| The metric point from 0 to 144.

A set of 'monitored metrics' is updated every two seconds in the exposure head. These metrics will trigger a 'shutdown fault' and / or a 'fatal fault' if they go out of range. A shutdown fault means that any plot that may be in progress is aborted and all critical subsystems ( such as focus, LDD, LVD, etc. ) are shutdown. A fatal fault means that the exposure head will either reset itself or request the host disable power to the exposure head. For some monitored metrics, the existing fault can be cleared ( or avoided altogether ) by 'masking' the specific metric value. This is done by using the monitor command hlt mask (on|off) <index>.
| Metric masking exists largely for the convenience of product developers who are often working on test jigs running standard firmware but lacking various hardware components. In an ideal world, a fully functioning exposure head with all boards present should have no masked metrics. However, in practice it could become necessary to mask off a metric that gets too close to its trip point under certain circumstances. This is an undesirable situation that may be necessary to keep a head functioning until it can be serviced.
| Note that some metrics either do not implement the shutdown and / or fatal thresholds or do not permit the shudown and / or fatal thresholds to be maskable. Although the mechanics are in place to allow all metrics to be maskable, for some metrics masking is either irrelevent or has no effect.
