Carriage Stuck at Service Speed

Author/Submitter: A. Posner (04/02/97)

Product Family: Imagesetters / Platesetters

Sometimes during installation we experience a problem involving the carriage getting stuck in service speed mode accompanied by noise (screaming) from the stepper motor.

The reason for this is the higher speed and lowered force that we have in service speed mode.

New software will enable the reduction of service speed from 4000 to 3000 (or to another number between 2000 to 4000 ) solving this problem.

An alternate solution might be to try to run the carriage via diagnostics for a while, forcing it to run in service speed and then the stepper and the leadscrew will run without the problem when you return to normal operating mode.

Before replacing any part on the plotter you should try run the carriage as follows:

Diagnostic program - utility - mechanics - carriage - GO FOR EVER.

Run the carriage in service speed ( Full Speed )

Most probably in the first few runs the carriage will get stuck but after a few times, it will be released and the carriage will be able to run for the full range.

It is recommended that it will run in this mode for 1-2 hours !

Or move it forward - backward for the same period of time (via diagnostics).

Run this procedure in addition to the rubber coupling check.
