Dolev 800V

Penta prism Spinner replacement with Cube Spinner

Ady Posner
March 26, 2000

On the Dolev 800V the Spinner with Penta prism can be replaced by a new spinner with a cube. The "cube" spinner
is more reliable and is rotating much more quiet then the Penta spinner. The new spinner required new focus lens
therefore the replacement involved replacing the spinner and the focus lens.

The new spinner required new focus lens therefore the replacement involved replacing the spinner and the focus lens.

The Replacement Steps:

  1. Remove the old spinner.
  2. Remove the focus lens.
  3. Install the new focus lens on the lens housing.
  4. Install the new spinner.
  5. Adjust the spinner centering.
  6. Adjust the focus.
  7. Align the machine registration.

Step By Step Procedure:

  1. Open the left and right service doors.
  2. Remove the light-proof cover from both sides of the unit.
  3. Move the Film Spreader roller to the middle of the drum circumference (400-600 mm).
  4. Send the carriage to end position. (To the right).
  5. Power off the imagesetter.
  6. Remove the shutter protector.
  7. Release spinner assembly from the carriage.
  8. Disconnect the spinner connectors and remove the spinner.
  9. Release the two set-screws that hold the focus lens.
  10. Remove the focuse lens.
  11. Install the new focuse lens.
  12. Put the new spinner assembly carefully into place.Pay attention to the focus lens. Do not scratch it.
  13. Assemble the five screws of the spinner housing assembly, but do not tighten them.
  14. Re-connect the spinner connector, encoder connector and the wiring. Secure them.
  15. Adjust the new assembly. Refer to Adjustment below.

Adjustment

  1. Take the Spinner Centering Kit (507C1L231) with the three dial indicators.
Put it on the reference jig and adjust the zero points if necessary.
  2. Attach the jig to the spinner housing assembly (be careful with the wiring and the fiber optic cable).
  3.  Assemble the lower adjustment plate to the lower part of the spinner assembly holder.
  4. Screw on the plate until it nearly makes contact with the four adjustment screws.
  5. Loosely assemble the fifth screw of the spinner assembly, but not too much (enough to keep the assembly in place).
  6. Screw in the adjustment screws to move the spinner housing assembly to a centricity. The tolerance should be within +/- 20 micron.
  7. Tighten the five spinner housing screws and remove adjustment screws.
  8. Dismantle the Spinner Centering Kit and the lower adjustment plate.
  9. Focus adjustment, FocFjksfgjsfgLoad a film into the drum at a length which will cover at least half the circumference of the drum.
  10. Activate the laser beam via Diag/Util or using Diag/Util/Misc focus which will set all to focus adjustment (load film, set laser).
  11. Gently rotate the spinner in order to reflect the beam on a film cover surface.
  12. Take the pin-shaped part of the lens focus kit and thread it into the focus lens. The thread is inside the slot in the front of the lens housing assy.
  13. Release the two set screws which hold the focus lens, not completely only enough to allow movement of the focus lens.
  14. Take a piece of paper and make a hole in it large enough to allow the laser beam to pass and put it as near as you can to the penta prism.
  15. Start moving the focus lens until you receive the max. grainy reflection that you can get in this position. Lock the set screw carefully and check that the lens didn't move from the position. If necessary do the adjustment again. Remember to lock the set screw on the top first and then the side one.
  16. Check the focus results, If the results are not good enough, open the light prove cover and assemble the lens focus kit (cat. no. 380A34175).
Expose several dot files while moving the focus lens in steps of 0.1mm in both directions.
Check the results and choose the best result to set the focus in.
  17. Expose a Grid File and measure it. If the Bow error is greater than 30 microns then Perform the Bow Adjustment Procedure.
  18. Note – On the new cube spinner the bow adjustment is oposite to the results from the measurment jig!
  19. Measure the Grid and if the Linearity error is greater than 50 microns then perform theLinearity Adjustment Procedure.
  20. Check the output quality.
