Focus Adjustment Tips

A. Posner
Document Released: 11/21/97

The focus lens is located on the lens housing assy (focus & collimation assy). It is the last lens on the Optical Path and its purpose is to focus the beam on the surface of the Internal drum.

The focus lens is held in its housing by two set screws, which are perpendicular to each other.

Adjustment Procedure:

The adjustment can be done on both sides of the machine.

  1. Move the Dynamic Optics to the home position or to the end position as it is convenience to you via Diag/Util.
  2. Open the left ( or right ) side door and the light prove cover.
  3. Load a film into the drum at a length which will cover at least half the circumference of the drum.
  4. Activate the laser beam via Diag/Util or using Diag/Util/Misc focus which will set all to focus adjustment (load film, set laser).
  5. On old Static optics: Remove the filter from the static optic assy in order to get the maximum output power. On new Static optics: Set the laser beam to 7000.
  6. Gently rotate the penta prism in order to reflect the beam on a film cover surface.
  7. Take the pin-shaped part of the lens focus kit and thread it into the focus lens. The thread is inside the slot in the front of the lens housing assy.
  8. Release the two set screws which hold the focus lens, not completely only enough to allow movement of the focus lens.
Important: release the side one first and then the one from the top!
  9. Take a piece of paper and make a hole in it large enough to allow the laser beam to pass and put it as near as you can to the penta prism.
  10. Start moving the focus lens until you receive the max. grainy reflection that you can get in this position. Lock the set screw carefully ( lock the top one first and then the side screw ) and check that the lens didn't move from the position. If necessary do the adjustment again.
  11. Close the light prove cover.
  12. Expose dots file via the Calplot around the drum circumference and check the focus. If it's good, dismantle the pin-shape part of the lens focus kit and close the system.
  13. If the results are not good enough, open the light prove cover and assemble the lens focus kit (cat. no. 380A34175). Rotate the dial indicator so it will face you depending on the side you chose to work from.
  14. Expose several dot files while moving the focus lens in steps of 0.1mm in both directions.
  15. Check the results and choose the best result to set the focus in. Lock the set screw carefully ( lock the top one first and then the side screw ) and check that the focus did not changed.
  16. If none of the Exposes are satisfied, check the spinner housing assy centrality.
  17. Make sure that the registration did not move!
