Flash memory write error 36508 and CFL:WARNING: Feature licensing communication failed

Product

  • MCE device running CFL licensing

Error

Flash memory write error 36508 and CFL:WARNING: Feature licensing communication failed. CTP is not licensed. [BRD:The flash memory write operation failed to verify]

Symptoms

The device fails to retrieve the license even though the PPP link is up, the dongle is recognized and the license is loaded properly in the Creo Feature Licensing Manager. If you increase the CFL debug level in the firmware to retrieve more information, the CFL SVC logs will show only that the device was connected and then disconnected immediately for no reason:

W 08Aug06 17:50:33.109: CFL Service PA:169.254.255.110:63828 0 It appears that the client has disconnected.
I 08Aug06 17:50:33.109: CFL Service PA:169.254.255.110:63828 0 Finished talking to client due to no more data.

Cause

License initialization by the firmware fails because the flash memory has a corrupted bit.

Solution

  1. Use the Service Shell FirmwareUpgrade script to back up the NVS parameters.
  2. Type the command >> stg erase flash.
  3. Perform another backup of the NVS.
  4. Use the Windiff software to compare the two NVS dump text files.
  5. Replace the values that are different, with the values from the first backup.
  6. Reset the device.
  7. Check that the PPP link is up. This can take up to 1.5 minutes.
The device should now be properly licensed.
  8. If the previous steps do not solve the problem, the flash memory might be defective. Try the following steps:
    1. Replace the MCE board.
After replacing the MCE board, do not load the backup flash.bin file because it will contain the corrupted bit.
    2. Enter the NVS parameters according to step 5 above.
