Aligning the X-Y Bar Parallel to the Drum

Re-edited By: Dennis Kaliser
Date: Jan 2001

General

The following procedure adjusts the XY system to be parallel to the Drum. This will ensure smooth plate transport from cassette loading to the drum system. The pictures used in this procedure are from an older loading system. The procedure is still relevant for the newer loading system. In the newer system, tension can also be modified by adjusting the screws on the spring tension unit.

Tools

  1. Set of Allen Keys (Imperial not metric)
  2. Philips head screw driver

Procedure

X-adjustment

Adjust Belt Tension

  1. Move the X-Y bar to its closest position
to the drum or to the metal bracket
  2. Measure the distance from the bar edge
to drum on both sides or from the metal
    bracket to the X-Y bar.

Note: if there is a significant difference between them (more than ±1mm)
then continue the procedure:

  1. Disconnect the X-motor (Molex connector).
  1. Open the right side door and loosen
the two screws controlling tension on
    the right belt.
  1. When the screws are loose, rotate the X-shaft by hand until the bar is parallel to the drum and equidistant on both sides.
  1. Tighten the adjusting screws on the belt.
  2. If the belt tension is not enough (just a bit stiff to squeeze together) loosen the screws on the bracket holding the belt and shorten the belt by one or two notches to increase tension. Tighten the screws when tension is acceptable. See figure 2.

Y-adjustment

Adjust Belt Tension

  1. Move the X-Y bar to its closest position to the drum or to the metal
  2. Measure distance from bar edge to drum on both sides or from the metal bracket to the X-Y bar.

Note: if there is a significant difference between them (more than ±1mm) then continue the procedure:

  1. Disconnect the Y motor (Molex connector).
  1. Loosen the two screws controlling tension of right belt driven by the Y-motor.
  1. When the screws are loose, rotate the Y-shaft by hand (see figure 3 [2]) to move the Transport bar until it is parallel to the drum and equidistant on both sides.
  2. Tighten the screws on the belt.
  3. If the belt tension is not enough (visual or hand measurement), loosen the screws on the bracket holding the belt and shorten the belt by one or two notches to increase tension. Tighten the screws when tension is acceptable.
