Scratching of plates is a famous problem that field engineers have to face from time to time yet the causes are not easy to detect or solve. Below is a table suggesting sources for scratching and their suitable cures, Including the replacement of rollers; Please bare in mind that the optional Soft rollers are expensive and should be used only after verifying the source of the scratches and trying other solutions first.
Processor, heater temperature, plate batch, plate due date and storage conditions are major factors that can affect plate sensitivity to marking; Start with checking how and when scratches and marks started appearing and whether it is related to these factors.
You can check a suspected source by elimination; Use a tape to cover the Suspected roller (for example), then load and unload to see if scratch Disappears.
For easier identification/revelation of the scratches/marks expose uniform images.

Wheels of plate
supports |
Clean or replace wheels, make sure wheels are rolling freely with no excess friction (The whole support P/N is 507A20414) |
|
Cassette is too high relative to machine, therefore cassette rollers press hard on the plate |
Readjust machine height to the maximum possible |
|
Cassette rollers are stuck or not rolling freely |
Clean and remove residues of silicon rubber that may be around roller |
|
Cassette rollers not smooth |
Replace damaged rollers (P/N 290E9L765) |
|
Cassette rollers still scratching the plate |
Replace hard rollers with soft ones- P/N # 290A2U472 (x 35 rollers) |
|
Plate is being dragged/pressed to hard against disposal rollers during X motion |
Raise Y during X motion over the disposal rollers; Relevant parameters: Loading System/Loading System Setup/ “Y_Extra_To_Detector
“ Loading System/Load Plate/From Cassette to Punch Stage/ “Y
Up After_Cantring” |
|
Disposal rollers still scratching the plate |
Replace hard rollers with soft ones- P/N # 290A2S981(x75 rollers) |
|
Protruding tie-wraps along punch beam scratch the plate |
Remove protruding tie-wrap and replace with new one, making sure the connection and tip are facing sideways and not upwards |
|
Dots/pinholes appear on the plate, lined in constant intervals along drum circumference axis |
Usually caused by the upper or lower load rollers. Remove assembly and check rollers and their springs (P/N 290A4L268),Roller (P/N290F2M754+290F2M755)(whole assembly: Upper roller Assy P/N 510P51270, Lower roller Assy P/N 510P51271) |
|
Rollers beneath gripper actuators beam not rolling free |
Check rollers for free rotation, remove to clean if necessary |
|
Plate leader rollers (under the drum)Are stuck/not clean/not smooth |
Clean rollers or replace whole assembly if necessary (P/N 510P1P590, for VL P/N 510K1P260) |
|
Plate leader hinges are protruding beyond rollers radius and touch the plate (Some were badly manufactured) |
Replace the whole assembly with new P/N 510P1P590 (for VL P/N 510K1P260) |
