Preventing lines from intermittently appearing on exposed images

Product

Kodak Lotem 800 II Family

Platform

Kodak Prinergy workstation

Symptoms

Lines intermittently appear on exposed images.

Solution

Determine whether the problem is related to upstream data (Prinergy to platesetter) or downstream data (platesetter to TH2 head).

  1. Create a test file.
  2. Expose the file, and ensure that lines do not appear on the image.
  3. Save the Service Shell log file that contains the test file’s exposure data information.
  4. Locate and then copy the log file’s cycle redundancy check (CRC) values.
  5. When lines appear on an image, expose the test file used in step 1 and perform the following actions:
    1. Ensure that lines appear on the exposed test file.
    2. Compare the CRC values for the exposure in which lines appear with the CRC values for the exposure without lines.
If the CRC values are different for both exposures, the problem can be isolated to upstream data (Prinergy to platesetter).
If the CRC values are the same for both exposures, then the problem can be isolated to downstream data (platesetter to TH2 head).

Resolve upstream data problems

Individually perform each of the following steps and then, after each step, check whether the problem has been resolved.

  1. On the Prinergy workstation, ensure that the latest version of the SCSI driver board is installed. If required, upgrade the SCSI driver to the latest version.
  2. Ensure that there is a sufficient distance between the Prinergy SCSI cable and any high-voltage cables.
  3. Ensure the SCSI cable’s connector pins are not damaged. If there is any damage to the pins, replace the SCSI cable.
  4. Replace the SCSI cable adapter.
  5. Replace the Prinergy workstation’s SCSI board.
  6. Ensure that the standard Prinergy workflow has been correctly configured.
  7. Ensure that the Prinergy workstation has sufficient memory installed.
  8. Replace the Prinergy workstation.

Resolve downstream data problems

Individually perform each of the following steps and then, after each step, check whether the problem has been resolved.

  1. Ensure that the power entering the devices is correctly conditioned and that the grounding meets the recommended Kodak prerequisites.
  2. Ensure that the latest versions of the TMCE board and the TH2 head are installed. If required, upgrade the firmware.
  3. Replace the TMCE board.
  4. Replace the data cable located between the TMCE board and the TH2 head.
  5. Replace the power cable located between the TMCE board and the TH2 head.
  6. Replace the hot link cable located between the TMCE board and the TH2 head.
  7. Replace the TMCE and TH2 power supply.
  8. Replace the distribution box.
  9. Replace the TH2 head.
