Banding might occur when using Agfa Amigo plates and thermal 2 head on Magnus 400 Quantum/Magnus 400 II Quantum platesetters

Product

  • Kodak® Magnus™ 400 II Quantum
  • Kodak Magnus 400 Quantum

Symptoms

White lines (banding) appear on Agfa® Amigo plates with AM or FM screening that are imaged at the specified power and drum speed.

When trying to calibrate the SR value, if you leave the focus laser on the same spot for a prolonged number of seconds, the sum value changes very quickly.

Cause

The platesetter system is sensitive to the laser power density.

Workaround

Quick fix: Reduce the laser power and drum speed to maintain the 240 mJ/cm2 exposure.

Slightly out-of-focus imaging reduces power density and improves solid banding. However, it also narrows the latitude in screens and may affect run length.

Banding might disappear at ~16.0 W, but will require reducing the throughput.

If post baking is possible, you can reduce the power without sacrificing speed or run length.

Important: Do not replace the thermal 2 head (TH2), or any other platesetters parts. Replacing the head is subject to approval by a member of the product support team.
