Encoder vibration causes artifacts

Applies to

  • ThermoFlex
  • VLF Trendsetter
  • VLF Platesetter

Description

Image artifacts due to encoder unit vibration

Causes

The encoder is mounted on the home side drum pin and is connected via a central shaft to an interference fit disk in the drum endbell. The shaft is supported at the endbell and at the bearing, near the encoder. Although the encoder mount is compliant to allow for some misalignment, the shaft experiences some vibration that is transmitted to the encoder and could result in inconsistent speed signals. The result would be image artifacts. The solution was to install a harmonic damper on the body of the encoder. If this damper is missing or incorrectly installed, image artifacts can result.

Solutions

Verify that the damper is installed on the body of the encoder. Check to ensure a layer of sorbothane (soft, black rubbery material) isolates the split collar mass from the body of the encoder.

To Test:
Grasp the body of the split collar mass and rotate the mass back and forth slightly. The layer of sorbothane should allow the mass to rotate slightly without moving the encoder body. Reposition the sorbothane material if necessary.
