Mainscan Vibration Artifacts

Error

Mainscan vibration artifacts occurring at the tailstock end of the plot.

Cause

  • Excessive wear between the tailstock journal and the pin of the arbor or drum causes vibration artifacts because of the lack of constraint at the end of the imaging surface. The upper limit on the clearance between the journal and the drum pin has not yet been determined. If there is excessive debris at this interface, there may be too much clearance.
  • Damaged tailstock bearings. Because the tailstock bearings are unsealed, there is the potential for debris to get into the bearings and degrade their performance.

Solution

  • Adjust the clearance between the tailstock jounal and the arbor or drum pin.
  • Disengage the tailstock and rotate the journal by hand to feel if the bearing is running smoothly throughout its full revolution. Replace the tailstock bearing if necessary.
