Sleeves will not load

Sleeve capable devices

Error

A sleeve is difficult to load onto a shell or it will not load at all.

Cause/Solution

There could be a number of reasons for this problem. Some of them are listed here in the order that they should be checked.

  1. Cause: There is a buildup of dirt or debris, either on the end of the shell, or on the inside of the sleeve.
Solution: Clean the exterior of the shell and the inside of the sleeve as required.
  2. Cause: The sleeve is worn or damaged.
Solution: Determine whether the difficult loading happens on a particular sleeve or on any sleeve. If all sleeves are difficult to load on a particular shell, the problem is most likely caused by the shell; continue on to the next step.
If the problem occurs with only one sleeve, replace the sleeve.
  3. Cause: For shells with air valves, the air valves are not set correctly and there is not a constant air stream at the air holes.
Solution: Adjust the air valves to their correct settings. See Shell air valve maintenance.
  4. Cause: The air passages are partially or completely plugged.
Solution: Wear safety glasses for this step.
Visually inspect the air holes on the surface of the shell.
If any of the holes are plugged, turn the air bearing on, and use a small straight wire (or straightened paper clip) to try to gently dislodge any debris in the air hole.
Turn the air bearing off and continue to inspect the air holes.
If there is no improvement in the performance of the air bearing, turn each of the air valves one full turn, and then turn on the air bearing.
If there is still no improvement, turn off the air bearing, remove the air valves, and replace them. See Shell air valve maintenance.
  5. Cause: The shell is worn or damaged.
Solution: Follow the steps related to damage and wear to the outer surface of the shell in Shell Inspection.
