Trendsetter NEWS Dual Bay—Replacing the LIONEL board

Product

Trendsetter NEWS with Dual Bay option

Component

LIONEL (little input/output node electronics) board

Background

The Trendsetter NEWS device with the Dual Bay option has a LIONEL board in the power box to provide extra I/O capability for the dual bay plate separator arms. If this LIONEL board fails, the replacement board is shipped configured for a mode of operation (Mode 3, communication over CAN bus disabled) that is suitable for use in the UDRC (universal debris removal cabinet), but not in the NEWS Dual Bay power box.

For the latter application, the LIONEL board's mode of operation needs to be changed to Normal (CAN bus enabled).

Requirements

  • Anti-static wrist strap
(Always wear a wrist strap when you are working with electrical components inside the power box.)
  • Replacement LIONEL board (10-4801B)

Procedure

To replace a failed LIONEL board:

  1. Turn off NEWS device power.
  2. Remove the power box access panel.
  3. Unplug all the connectors from the board. Note the location of each one to help with the reconnection of the cables.
  4. Use 3 mm hex key to loosen the four M3 screws holding the board to the power box.
  5. Remove the four M3 screws.
  6. Remove the old board and put it into an antistatic bag.
  7. Install the new board and fasten the four M3 screws.
  8. Reconnect the cables to the board.
  9. Turn the NEWS device on and wait for the device to restart.

To configure the new LIONEL board with the correct mode of operation (Normal):

Before you begin, check the Heartbeat status LED to see whether the LIONEL board is already in Normal Operation mode. If so, the LED flashes on and off at fixed one-second intervals. If the LED flashes at any other intervals, perform the procedure below.

  1. Connect a terminal emulator to the RS-232 serial port (J20) on the LIONEL board. The default baud rate of the serial port is 9600.
  2. Press the Reset button on the LIONEL board.
  3. When you see the message...
    Override Binary Mode? (Y/N)
...immediately press the Y key on your computer's keyboard.
Note: If you don’t press the Y key within one second, the mode will not change, and you will need to go back to step 2.
  4. Wait six seconds, and then enter:
    Creo
This sets the mode of operation to Normal.

Test

Confirm that the Heartbeat status LED now flashes on and off at fixed one-second intervals. If so, replace the power box access panel.
