Upgrading the Model of a Trendsetter NEWS MCE Single-Head Output Device

Product

  • Trendsetter® NEWS 50
  • Trendsetter NEWS 70
  • Trendsetter NEWS 100

Background

This procedure describes how to upgrade a single-head Trendsetter NEWS MCE output device from one model to another, when the customer purchases a model upgrade. Single-head NEWS devices cannot be upgraded to dual-head (NEWS 200) devices in the field. Similarly, the Trendsetter NEWS SA (semi-automatic) device cannot be upgraded to an automatic device (with autoloader and unload table) in the field.

Note: For upgrades to Trendsetter NEWS 100 or NEWS 150 from NEWS 50 or NEWS 70, it is a prerequisite that the thermal head be upgraded from TH1.7 to TH2. See Trendsetter 800 II/NEWS MCE Thermal Head 1.7 to 2.x Upgrade Procedure or Trendsetter NEWS MPE Thermal Head 1.7-to-2.x Upgrade Procedure.

Procedure

Call the Response Centre in CCA for assistance in upgrading models. In many cases, the RC specialist will be able to dial in to the NEWS device and change all the necessary parameters remotely, using the following procedure.
  1. Use Service Shell’s NVSDump script to make a backup of the existing firmware parameters.
For details, refer to the Service Shell online help.
  2. In Service Shell’s command input box, enter command
    config <password> <NEWSxx>
where <NEWSxx> is the model to which you are upgrading (example: NEWS70, NEWS100, and so on).

Note: There is no field upgrade available from single-head to dual-head NEWS devices (i.e., it is a “forklift upgrade”).

  3. Enter command
    product
to confirm that the device configuration has been changed to the desired model.
  4. Check to see which options are enabled by entering commands:
    access dev
    option
Options should be enabled or disabled as described in the table below.
Option Configuration (NEWS 70, NEWS 100, NEWS 150) Comments/dependencies

  1. If necessary, enable or disable options using command:
    option <option name> enable
    or
    option <option name> disable
  2. Change the drumspeed parameter in the thermal head firmware to the value required for the throughput of the upgraded model/plate type/plate size. See the Qualified Media Database spreadsheet on the Media site’s Media Qualification page for details.
  3. Image an exposure series and change the laserpower parameter in the thermal head firmware to the correct value for the best energy transfer at the new drum speed. See the appropriate media tech note on the Media site’s Thermal Plates page for more information.
  4. Use Service Shell’s NVSDump script to make a backup of the firmware parameters of the upgraded device.
