Component

PS3, Carriage Amp, and new adapter cable #10-5067A
Problem

For some combinations of PS3 and carriage amps, the current drawn by the carriage amp is below the minimum required to reliably maintain PS3 operation. The result is a cyclic DC on/off condition. There is no inherent fault with either component.

The symptom of this problem is as follows:
After power-up, all indicator LEDs on the Carriage Amplifier are flashing on and off in unison. Measurement of the +5V, +12V, and -12V lines shows that these voltages are turning on and off.

Solution(s) The addition of a new adapter cable, in-line with the existing PS3/4-CA cable, provides an additional load to the +5V rail and draws the minimum current required:
  1. Power down the device.
  2. Remove the cable connector from J1 (CA-PWR) on the Carriage Amplifier.
  3. Insert the 10-5067A Preload Adapter Cable (assembly drawing ) between J1 and the loose cable connector.
  4. If necessary, gently bend the leads of the power resistor present on the Preload Adapter Cable to avoid contact with other components.
