Subscan variability on imaged plates

Product

  • Trendsetter® 400/800
  • Trendsetter NEWS
  • Trendsetter VLF

Symptoms

A subscan image artifact appears where the image is compressed or stretched variably in the subscan direction.

Cause

The ballnut is not tightly fastened to the carriage platform.

Solution

To diagnose whether this is the cause of subscan variability:

  • Image a plate with thin vertical lines.
  • Expose the plate twice with the same image.

  • If the plot looks like:
    | | | | || || || | | | | | | | | |
    where subscan is ---->
    then the device has this problem.

    Notes:

    • This artifact normally occurs at the beginning of the plot but can occur at any location through the plot.
    • Variability normally corrects itself after a few swaths.
    • Variability only appears in subscan: there is no noticeable problem in mainscan.

If the plot looks like the above:

  • Tighten the setscrew that attaches the ballnut to the carriage platform.
