Carriage motor shaft slips inside of the drive pulley

Applies to

  • VLF Trendsetter
  • VLF Platesetter

Symptoms

  1. An overlapped/double image or a squished image on the plate. The head doesn't move in a linear fashion.
  2. The image start position on the plate varies; ultimately there are imaging artifacts. The effect can be quite subtle at the start.

To Test

  • To check if the pulley is slipping,  remove the belt cover and put a felt pen mark on the face of the pulley and on the end of the motor shaft.
  • Cycle the carriage back and forth a few times at high speed.
  • Inspect the marks to see if they have moved relative to each other.

Solutions

ECO B522 changed the carriage ballscrew stepper motor's pulley, P/N 57-4154A,  to have a slot through the pulley hub to improve the pulley's holding power on the motor shaft ( implemented Nov. 97). VLF Platesetters V35 and subsequent and VLF Trendsetters B62 and subsequent were fitted with the new pulley. If you have a machine with an earlier serial number that has a pulley slipping problem, order service kit 05-0093 which contains a replacement stepper motor c/w pulley.
