Timeout moving engine actuator errors

Applies to

  • VLF Platesetter
  • VLF Trendsetter

Description

General engine actuation timeout reported. Caused by the following:
  • the actuation did not occur
  • the actuation did occur but was not sensed
  • the actuation did occur, but not within the timeout limit

Causes and solutions

Misadjusted reed switches or reed switch magnets

Misadjusted Hall effect sensors

Actuation reported by the time engine command exceeds the timeout values:

  • Improper timeout value. See Engine actuation timing for normal actuation times. See also Masking sensors and timeout values in notes below.
  • Pneumatic hoses improperly connected/leaking
Pertains to motion of TEC, LEC, and roller backbones, of TEC lock/unlock, and of balance weights.
  • Misadjusted cylinder speed control. See Engine actuation timing.
Pertains to motion of TEC, LEC, and roller backbones, of TEC lock/unlock, and of balance weights.
  • Misadjusted cylinder pressures. See Engine pressure regulation.
Pertains to motion of TEC, LEC, and roller backbones, of TEC lock/unlock, and of balance weights.
  • Mechanical binding or interference of backbone in side plates or follower angles
    - Disconnect backbones from rod ends. With the cylinders in the retract position, move the backbone up and down manually at each end to feel for an interference of the follower end against the side plates or follower outer race between the follower angles). Pertains to motion of TEC, LEC, and roller backbones.
    - Set backbone follower outer race to follower angle clearance to 0.10 mm (0.005") to 0.25 mm (0.010") (perpendicular to backbone motion).

Incorrect plant line pressure or flow

See the VLF Platesetter site preparations document.

System filter plugged and needs replacing

Wrong system pressure threshold

Ensure system pressure threshold (NVS parameter al spt) is set at 70 psi Decreasing the threshold can allow operation at lower system pressures but is not reliable and not recommended. If the air supply to the machine is inadequate please inform the customer and VLF engineering.

Damaged cylinder seals

Blowing air will be heard at the cylinders.

Leaking at manifold or valves

Leaking at manifold or valves due to damage/clogging of valve or gasket (blowing air will be heard at the manifold or long actuation times will be observed with cylinder speed controls wide open)

Incorrect mechanical adjustments on the actuator cylinders

Shoulder bolt nuts on the backbone rod end missing or not done up properly

  • Affects motion of TEC, LEC, and roller backbones.

Improper placement of TE clamps after a manual operator plate removal

Notes

Balance weights

The balance actuation sensors should not be disabled.

Masking sensors and timeout values:

Prior to masking any sensors, increase the timeout value (set altim drt, set altim lec, set altim tec, set altim teul) to a safe level above the values reported by the time engine command. Failure to do so can result in serious damage to the engine. Masking sensors should be treated as a temporary fix and used only to get the customer up and running.

Flow controls

The trailing edge lock/unlock flow controls (mounted on the manifold) should have a black locking ring. All other flow controls on the engine should have an aluminum locking ring. Cylinder speed controls slow the cylinder by throttling the cylinder exhaust.
