Engine Balance Weights running away

Applies to

Machines affected All machines.

Error Number None

Component Engine balance weights

Problem The pulley end balance weights are running away.

Description
  • The balance weights, especially the pulley end weight, is running away or not staying in the set position.
  • The Pulley end weight makes a distinct ratcheting sound when it runs away.
  • Noticeable clunking noise from the balance weights when the drum starts and stops.
  • Timeout moving engine actuator error that is traced to the balance weight actuators.
  • When plate size is changed, a balance weights not detected warning is displayed. The engine then does a "bal find" to locate the balance weights and move the weights to the new position.
  • Abnormal vibration of engine assembly due to balance weight being in the wrong position.
  • Signs of black powder around pullet end balancer.
Causes If the NVS parameter >>set AL bdo has been changed from the factory setting, the above symptoms could be experienced. It is possible that the NVS parameter was set to default (-150 tach ticks) during the last firmware upgrade. Some engines are experiencing excessive wear on the detents in the drive pulley where the drum balancer locking pin engages, to the point that the locking pin slips out of the detent. This wear occurs on the backside of the detents, on the inside of the groove. While the normal operation of this mechanism may produce some wear, and the NVS parameter >>bdo (balance detent offset) is not correctly set, the detent and the locking pin will not be aligned when the locking pin is engaged. This will result in the locking pin abrading the sides of the detent as it engages.
Solutions Check the current setting for NVS parameter >>bdo:
  1. At the diagnostic terminal, type >>set al bdo
Set name Full name Active Saved Default Units
    lecpos lec_drum_pos 12345 12345 12460 tach ticks
    tecpark tec_park_pos 11263 11263 11350 tach ticks
    stl sensor_to_lec 507 507 509 mm
    tecoff tec_offset 1250 1250 1365 tach ticks
    bdo balance_detent_
    offset
    -250 -250 -150 tach ticks
  2. If the active setting is the same as the default setting, there is probably an error. You can check what the factory setting was in the Factory Settings section of the corresponding product's Technical Library page.
  3. To reset this parameter, refer to the NVS Parameter bdo Calibration section in the 'Adjusting the balance actuation assemblies' at Procedures/Engine/Balance weights.
  4. If the bdo parameter was incorrect, the drive pulley detents should be inspected for evidence of excessive wear.
  5. If the detent slots are worn to the point that the detent pin is no longer a snug fit, order a new Detent Arm Assembly, P/N 50-2399A. This new Detent Arm has a double tapered pin that may improve the engagement with worn detent slots.
  6. Another option is to reposition the Drive Pulley so that the worn detents are no longer used.
  7. Please notify the appropriate Product Support Specialist (listed below) with the machine serial number and location if either an incorrect bdo setting is found or if the drive pulley shows signs of excessive wear on the balancer detents.
