Abnormal Engine Vibration

Applies to
  • VLF Trendsetter AL
  • VLF Trendsetter
  • VLF Platesetter

Machines affected The following machines using the Creo encoder (optical encoder):
  • VLF Trendsetters running version 1.5 firmware VLF
  • Trendsetter Autoloaders running version 1.1 firmware
  • VLF Platesetters running version 2.40 firmware

Error Number None

Component Engine balance weights

Problem The engine exhibits more than usual vibration when plotting as a result of the engine balance weights not being placed in the correct position, which is approximately 180° from the trailing edge clamps when looking at the end of the engine drum.

Causes and Solutions Cause: There is a possibility that after installing the firmware versions noted above, the NVS parameter "al_bto" could be changed to the default value of 5556. When the optical encoder is being used on these machines, this parameter must be set to 10,000.

Solution:

  1. Open a diagnostic window and check the current setting by typing "set al bto"
  2. If the current active setting is 5556, change it by typing "set al bto 10000"
  3. Save the change by typing "NVS save al bto"
  4. Load a plate and check the balance weights positioning. They should be approximately 180° from the trailing edge clamps. To confirm, enter "drum idle". The drum should remain stationary or rotate very slowly.
