Lytron MCS50 series Heat Exchanger

Description

On some output devices, heat exchangers are used as a replacement for the Polyscience chillers for cooling thermal 1.7x heads. They are far less complex and more reliable than chillers and use the same pre-mixed coolant that chillers use. A heat exchanger uses ambient temperature air to remove heat from the head's coolant fluid. It consists of a heat exchanger block, a pump, a coolant reservoir, and 3 fans to blow air through the heat exchanger block. Because the heat exchanger runs continuously, there is no need for a signal interface to the output device. The heat exchanger must not be installed near a heat source or warm air exhaust as this will affect its performance.
Heat exchangers are available in two models (includes heat exchanger, funnel, coolant, and brass fittings):

Note:

The interface in the Polyscience chiller has a jumper across pins 1 and 9 which is used as a cable detect signal by the Trendsetter. The heat exchanger does not require an interface cable to the Trendsetter, but the firmware still expects a cable detect jumper on the interface. A jumper plug (Creo part number 220-01149A) has been created to provide the cable detect signal by connecting pins 1 and 9. This plug connects to the Chiller connector on the debris removal cabinet or to the interface on the Trendsetter if there is no debris unit installed. If the jumper plug was not shipped with one of the early heat exchanger shipments, then order a jumper plug. As a temporary measure, connect a jumper between pins 1 and 9 on the connector or mask status #25 in the firmware (mask on 25, nvs save status 1).

Procedures

For information on operating and replacing the heat exchanger, refer to the manual supplied with the heat exchanger.

Planned Maintenance

Refer to the manual supplied with the heat exchanger for the most up-to-date procedures.

Operator maintenance (weekly)

Preventive maintenance (during PM)

Troubleshooting

Commands and NVS parameters

Because there is no electrical interface between the heat exchanger and output device, the commands and parameters used for the chiller will have no effect on the heat exchanger. Some useful commands for systems equipped with a heat exchanger are:
