Symptoms

After installing the ThermoFlex TIFF FE + TIFF Assembler Plus software on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, error 14: Failed to start the Aladdin device driver appears.

Note: This error cannot occur at a real site configuration because this product is intended for a Windows 2000 system. Installing the software on Windows XP is intended only for training and simulation purposes.

Solution

To solve the problem you need to install a new driver.
Note: You must have adminstrator privileges to perform the following procedure.

1. Disable your virus protection software.
2. Make sure that the Read Only attribute of c:\Windows\System\Drivers is disabled. To do so:
   • Select My Computer > c: > Windows > System32
   • Right click the Drivers folder and select Properties
   • Make sure that the Read Only toggle is not selected. Click OK.
3. Download hldinst.zip.
4. Unzip the files to a temporary folder.
5. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
6. In the command prompt window, change to the temporary folder where you placed the unzipped files.
7. In the command prompt window, type: hldinst -install
   Note: There is a space before -install.
8. Uninstall Xpo software.
9. Reinstall Xpo with ThermoFlex TIFF FE + TIFF Assembler Plus software.
10. Re-enable your virus protection software.
