Can I share a customer feature dongle with Prinergy® or Prinergy Evo?
Answer...
Yes.
The CFL feature dongle is the same type as the Prinergy/Evo dongle. If both applications are present on the same computer, they can share the same dongle. In fact, they must share the same dongle if they are on the same computer, because Evo will not work correctly if there is more than one Customer Feature dongle
plugged in.
How do I enable a new purchased feature (for example, speed upgrade) on a device?
Answer...
When a licensable feature is purchased, part of the order fulfillment process is to generate the license. To retrieve the license:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Part of the value of CFL is that it will tighten up the link between ordered features (tracked by part number) and licenses issued. It allows us to keep track of the licenses issued over time. Global Licensing will further tighten up these links.
Can I use the service dongle to enable additional features by changing nvs parameters? Does this allow me to override the feature dongle?
Answer...
No.
CFL changes the model. The firmware and nvs parameters no longer control the features of the devices. Instead, the firmware queries the workstation for its features and capabilities, and behaves accordingly. The effect of nvs parameters is essentially unchanged, but they cannot override the feature licensing.
Consider the example of imaging speed. The device maximum speed is set by the feature license in the workstation (typically in inches/minute or the equivalent). The actual imaging speed is determined by various imaging parameters, including drum speed and stroke width (no change from current behavior). Feature licensing does not prevent you from changing any parameters, but the firmware will check (at imaging time) if the actual imaging speed exceeds the licensed maximum speed. If so, it will return an error message. Note: for the particular example of imaging speed, the media calculator is still the primary source for drum speeds and related imaging parameters.
Does the customer feature dongle work over a network?
Answer...
No.
The feature dongle must be plugged in to the workstation where the feature is being used. For output device applications, this is typically the Print Console workstation.
See Where should I plug in the service dongle? Does the service dongle work over a network? for more information about the use of a service dongle over the network.
How can I tell if the system features are correctly licensed?
Answer...
You can use Creo Feature Licensing Manager to check the status of CFL-based licenses for all applications on the system. This is installed with the base CFL server software.
What if I have to rebuild the workstation? How can I regenerate my license?
Answer...
If it is possible to save the configuration files (found in the directory Creo\FeatureLicensing\Database), these files can simply be copied back over after the workstation is rebuilt. If the files are lost, the license can be retrieved as described in How do I enable a new purchased feature (for example, speed upgrade) on a device?
Can I move the customer feature dongle from one workstation computer to another?
Answer...
Yes.
You will need to reenter the license (as described above under What if I have to rebuild
the workstation? How can I regenerate my license?). Typically customers are not authorized to move the
dongle from one computer to another, but it is recognized that this could be required in some (uncommon) situations such as workstation failure. The dongle must not be moved to a workstation connected to a different
output device. The results in this case are undefined and likely to cause problems.
What happens if the customer feature dongle gets broken?
Answer...
If the dongle is broken or removed, the machine will determine its behavior based on the last license it retrieved from the workstation. However, the device will not plot without a customer feature dongle, because there is not a valid license without the dongle.
To order a replacement dongle:
Install the dongle as described in How do I enable a new purchased feature
What is the difference between a service dongle and a service license?
Answer...
A service license enables a certain level of service access for tools on the workstation. The most common way to enable a service license is to plug a service dongle into the workstation. However, there are several other ways to enable a service license. These include:
When will I need a service dongle? What products does service licensing protect?
Answer...
In the first rollout of CFL, you need a service dongle (or other form of service license, as described above) to run Media Console and the TCP/IP Configuration Wizard in Service Shell 2.6. Service Shell 2.6 SP1 checks for a service license and will override the password entry if a license is available.
The plan is that any new service tools will be protected by a service license. In future, protection of service tools will be extended to include existing tools and service access (possibly including low-level protection of the diagnostic port). We may also provide improved protection of Creo Intellectual Property via service licensing. As we extend the service protection model, careful consideration will be given to ensure that we do not detract from the service person's ability to do their job. Please consult the applicable Service Tools and Controlled Release documentation in order to determine the most current information about which tools are licensed in a particular release.
Is there a time limit on the service dongle? How do I recharge my service dongle?
Answer...
Yes there is a time limit on the service dongle. Currently this is set for 30 days. After this time, the dongle expires.
You recharge your service dongle by using Service Dongle Manager. This application runs in the background on your laptop and/or desktop computer, and may be configured to recharge your service dongle at various intervals. You must be connected to the Creo domain in order to recharge the service dongle.
What if my service dongle runs out? Can I recharge it again?
Answer...
Yes, you can recharge the dongle again if it runs out, using Service Dongle Manager.
Where should I plug in the service dongle? Does the service dongle work over a network?
Answer...
The most straightforward method is to plug the dongle directly into the device workstation. However, various networked configurations are possible:
What if I lose the service dongle? Can I still get service access?
Answer...
Yes, there are several different ways to achieve this. A time-limited service license can be generated or a license can be granted remotely by the Response Center. See What is the difference between a service dongle and a service license? for more information.
Can I give my service dongle to a customer, or leave it at a customer site?
Answer...
No.
You should never leave the dongle at a customer site.
Leaving a service dongle at a customer site introduces a security hole, which lasts until the dongle expires. In the (unusual) case where a customer needs temporary service access, a temporary service license can be generated by the Response Center. See What is the difference between a service dongle and a service license?.
How do I perform remote service on a system that requires the service dongle?
Answer...
The simplest way is to use Service Dongle Manager to remote a service dongle that is connected to your own computer to the remote customer site. The customer site will then behave as if it had a service dongle plugged into it until you remove the remoting or until the network connection is broken (at which time the service license is immediately removed).
Other methods are possible. See Where should I plug in the service dongle? Does the service dongle work over a network?
