When the incorrect carrier is loaded (via the Device menu’s Load Carrier option), Print Console and the device hang

Applies to

  • Print Console 1.x
  • Digital halftone proofing devices with firmware version 1.20 and above

Problem

Print Console and the output device both hang when an incorrect carrier is loaded into the device via the Print Console Device menu’s Load Carrier option.

For example, if you use Print Console’s Device menu to load a 4Up carrier, and on the actual device you load the 8Up carrier instead, the device will report error message 15393:

“ALE: Invalid or mis-loaded carrier (optical). Expecting <proof-type name> carrier. Click Resume and wait 1 min before reload.”

Pressing the Resume button clears the message, but there is no Procomm communication between the Host and the Master Processor Electronics (MPE). Attempting to resume from the diagnostic window also has no effect.

Workaround

Avoid loading the carrier via the Print Console Device Menu’s Load Carrier option, as Print Console will not hang when this error condition is encountered in a job context. (Loading the carrier via Print Console’s Device Menu is not absolutely necessary, since Print Console will prompt the user to load the appropriate carrier if it isn’t already on the drum.)

Permanent Fix

Preliminary testing indicates that this problem has been solved in Print Console version 2.0.
