Hot Folders not moving jobs to Pending Queue (Debugger.exe)

Applies to

Print Console 1.x

Problem

If you exit the debugger, and then any time after that copy the same file twice into a Hot Folder, then the Hot Folder will go cold. Normally, if you copy a file to a Hot Folder and that file's name is a duplicate of an unfinished file already queued via that same Hot Folder (i.e. in the working subfolder), then the duplicate is deleted and ignored. However, if the debugger is exited, then under this duplicate file condition, the Hot Folder stops working

Background

This problem happens when the utility that monitors the Hot folder, HotFolderQueue.exe, encounters an error. HotFolderQueue.exe runs regularly, though briefly, to monitor the folder and move new jobs to the Queue (Working folder). When it encounters an error (for example, when you copy a file from the Queue back into the Hot Folder), it stops and waits for the debugger to log the error message before continuing its job. If it can't find the debugger, it normally continues performing its tasks without logging the error. However, because the debugger was once running, HotFolderQueue.exe assumes—due to a small bug—it is still running. Thus, it stops doing its job and waits, indefinitely, for the Debugger to log the error.

To confirm this diagnosis, check the Process tab in the Windows NT Taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). If this is the cause, the HotFolderQueue.exe utility will be running (HotFolderQueue.exe should normally run very briefly and should not stay on the process list), but the debugger.exe will not be running.

Workaround

Re-start the debugger.

Permanent Fix

No permanent fix at this time. It will be fixed in Print Console 2.0.
