Cannot shut down Windows Explorer

Product

  Print Console, any version

Platform

Intel®, Dell™ OptiPlex™ GX280

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows®

Component

SoundMAX® driver

Symptoms

Symptoms can include any of the following:

  • In Windows Task Manager, the system process does not go below 50 percent (this is the most significant symptom).
  • Internet Explorer does not shut down properly.
  • Print Console does not shut down properly.
  • Windows Explorer does not shut down properly.
  • The workstation does not finish Restart (various processes fail to shut down and the operating system displays an End Task dialog box).
  • The workstation has trouble shutting down (as above), but will eventually shut down.
  • All sounds stop playing (all system sounds, window clicks, music, and so on).

Cause

The SoundMAX driver seems to be interfering with other drivers.

Solution

Sound capability is not required for CTP functionality, so remove the SoundMAX driver and disable audio functionality in the BIOS.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Select SoundMAX from the list of programs, click Change/Remove, and follow the instructions in the wizard. When you click Finish in the wizard, the computer will restart.
  3. During the Windows restart, press F2 to enter the BIOS setup.
  4. In the left pane, use the down arrow to highlight Onboard Device and then press Enter.
  5. In the list under Onboard Device, select Integrated Audio. In the right pane, you will see that it is On.
  6. Press Enter, use the arrow key to select Off, and press Enter again.
  7. Press ESC and select Save/Exit. The Windows restart continues and the problem should be solved.

If you did not press F2 in time to enter the BIOS setup, the setup program will attempt to reinstall the driver.

  1. Click Cancel in the dialog box with the message about reinstalling the driver.
  2. When the workstation has restarted, select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administration Tools > Computer Management > System Tools > Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click SoundMAX and click OK.
  4. In the Device usage box at the bottom of the General tab, select Do not use this device (disable) and click OK.
  5. Restart Windows, and during the restart process disable audio functionality in the BIOS as described in steps 3 to 7 of the first procedure.
