Error

Microsoft Windows Data Execution Prevention error: To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: CbootpServer136

This message has also named: Service Shell Application, DCAPI COM Server, LogMessageCulvert, StatEventCulvert, and other versions of the Bootp Server (for example, CbootpServer138).

Symptoms

After installing or updating a Windows Server 2003, XP, or Vista operating system, Print Console does not run correctly. For example, you may not be able to start Print Console.

Cause

Starting in Windows Server 2003, Microsoft introduced Data Execution Prevention (DEP) software, which is intended to protect against viruses. If DEP software finds a memory location that may threaten the security of the workstation, it tags it as nonexecutable. If a program tries to run code from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you.

Solution

The development team is working to fix the affected components so that DEP does not identify them as a security threat. Until this work is completed, you can work around this problem by adding the affected components to the DEP exception list.

  1. Log on as an administrator.
  2. From the Windows Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type sysdm.cpl, and click OK.
  3. From the System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Performance, click Settings.
  5. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
  6. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select, and then click Add to enter the names of the programs that you want the DEP feature to ignore.
  7. Navigate to the affected programs and click Open to add them to the list of exceptions. These programs are known to cause problems with DEP. You may need to add others:
    • The current Bootp Server (for example, C:\Creo\Firmware\CbootpServer138.exe)
    • C:\ServiceShell\Bin\Service.exe
    • C:\Creo\DCAPI\DCAPIServer.exe
    • C:\Creo\DCAPI\LogMessageCulvert.exe
    • C:\Creo\DCAPI\StatEventCulvert.exe
  8. When you have added all the exceptions, click Apply.
  9. Click OK twice.
