Thermal 2 Errorcode: [01313] Focus error: Media out of range

Error details | Troubleshooting information

Thermal2 Errorcode: [01313] Focus error: Media out of range
Thermal2 Errorcode
[01313] Focus error: Media out of range

Service Information This error is generated if the Auto-focus system is unable to track the media within the acceptable limit for focus error. Usually this indicates that the focus actuator is hitting its physical limit.

The head will report this error when the focus subsystem finds 10 consecutive samples with an error of 10 microns or more.

Note that this error code is also returned to the host as an unsolicited warning fault.

Operator Action Call service.

Causes
  • Check that the media is loaded properly (ie. flat to the drum).
  • Check that the specified imaging area is within the bounds of the loaded media.

Troubleshooting information

Possible cause

During plotting the head learns the profile of every swath. If there is a problem tracking the profile of the plate, the head indicates that the media is out of range but it does not stop the plot. It continues plotting and reports error 01313.

This error does not necessarily mean that there will be a visible artifact on the plate.

If the focus system is failing to track the profile of the plate, the following error may occur:
[01308] Focus: Shutdown due to lens position instability

When this error is reported, the plot will fail.

Possible causes for these errors are bends or dents in the plate, the head focusing on punch holes, and poor loading of the plate.

Suggested action

Practically, the error message [01313] Focus: Focus error: Media out of range is for information only, but if you enable verbose it is possible to get the information required to calculate the coordinates where the media is going out-of-range.

  1. To get more information when this error occurs, enable verbose for the focus subsystem to level 7. With the focus verbosity turned on the error will look like:
[01313] Focus: Focus error: Media out of range
    Out of focus error: Count=1 Swath=7 position=5 len=2

Note the swath and position for the next step.

  2. To calculate the subscan location:
Subscan position = swath * swath width

With 224 pixels enabled, the swath widths are:
    3200 dpi = 1.78mm
    2540 dpi = 2.24mm
    2400 dpi = 2.37mm
    1200 dpi = 4.74mm

  3. To calculate the mainscan position, look for a line like this:
Foc sample spacing = 1.460 mm
and use the calculation: Mainscan position = Position * foc sample spacing
