Troubleshooting BPD actuator overcurrent, [00405] "The beam-pointing actuator is over current"

Product

Thermal 2 head

Error

[00405] The beam-pointing actuator is over current

Symptoms

This is a rare situation. Only two cases have been identified in the field, so you should attempt to identify other possible problems first.

Normally it appears during laser on, or any time the bpd subsystem is turned on. For example:

TH2 > bpd mode on
*** Command Success ***
*** Unsolicited Message 37240 Recoverable Error
[Thermal:TEH2 error 00405, Beam-Pointing: The beam-pointing actuator is over current]

To diagnose this problem, look for the following behavior:

QUANTUM>> redirect enable
*** Command Complete
TH2 > eng
*** Command Success ***
TH2 > bpd mode on
*** Command Success ***
*** Unsolicited Message 37240 Recoverable Error
[Thermal:TEH2 error 00405, Beam-Pointing: The beam-pointing actuator is over current]

Solution

  1. Record the values for the BPD constants. See the example below:

    TH2 > set bpd
Key Sub. Parameter Active Default Units
    -------------------------------------------
    [00400] BPD kp 1.0000 1.0000
    [00401] BPD ki 0.0500 0.0500
    [00402] BPD kd 0.1000 0.1000
    [00403] BPD beamposition 0 0
    [00404] BPD holdcurrent 100.000 100.000 mA
    [00405] BPD highgain False False
    *** Command Success ***
  2. Contact the Response Center so that they can check these values against the factory values for the BPD constants. It is very unlikely, but the incorrect values could lead to this problem.
  3. If the values for the BPD constants match the factory BPD values, the head will need to be replaced.
