Cleaning and Lubricating the Carriage Tracks

Product

Trendsetter-based devices

Background

The carriage tracks should be completely covered with grease both on the 45 degree surfaces and the top surface. The tracks are uncoated steel and without proper grease coating the tracks may rust in humid environments.

The grease for the track is only needed to prevent the track from corroding. Excess grease can cause micro-banding image artifacts, since grease will build up in front of the bearings.

Requirements

  • Klüber Microlube GL 261 (82-1009)
  • Gloves
  • Clean, lint-free cloths (Kimberly Clark Kimwipes EX-L 2-ply or equivalent recommended)
  • Cleaning solvent (petroleum distillate—for example, Varsol™)

Procedure

WARNING: Read the manufacturer’s safety data sheets before using the grease. The use of gloves is recommended.

Clean the carriage tracks

  1. Type the command:
    carriage moveto 475
  2. Thoroughly clean the old grease off all the exposed surfaces of both carriage tracks (the top and both vee surfaces) with a clean lint-free cloth.
  3. Use cleaning solvent to clean the tracks completely.
  4. Type the command:
    carriage moveto 0
  5. Clean the previously inaccessible surfaces of the carriage tracks.

Lubricate the carriage tracks

  1. Insert Klüber Microlube GL 261 into the hole in one of the wipers on the away side of the carriage. Inject 0.25 cc of grease towards the top vee surface, and then inject another 0.25 cc of grease towards the bottom vee surface.
  2. Repeat step 1 for the remaining wipers on both the away side and the home side of the carriage.

  3. Apply a thin uniform coat of Klüber Microlube GL 261 to all the exposed surfaces of both tracks. Ensure that all exposed surfaces are completely coated. Grease is applied to the tracks for corrosion protection only. A thin coat of grease is all that is necessary, as long as long as that the entire surface is covered.
  4. Type the command:
    carriage moveto 475
  5. Apply a thin uniform coat of Klüber Microlube GL 261 grease to the exposed surfaces of the tracks where the carriage was previously sitting.
  6. Type the commands:
    carriage moveto 0
    carriage moveto 475

to run the carriage back and forth at least 10 times. Stop with the carriage in the home (0) position.
  7. Wipe the excess grease off the face of the wipers on the away side of the carriage with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  8. Type the command:
    carriage moveto 475
  9. Wipe the excess grease off the face of the wipers on the home side of the carriage with the cloth.
