TH3 Laser diode failure (error 05216)

Product

Thermal 3 head

Error

05216 Laser Diode: The laser current exceeds the current limits.

Symptoms

The laser fails to turn on, and reports error 05216.

Cause

This may be caused by the following:

  • Failure of the laser diode
  • Failure of one of the light valve (LV) driver boards

Solution

  1. Set the ldd vbs to level 7.
  2. Determine where the power loss is occurring. Type TH3> laser on
    You will see the following:
    TH3> LDD: 44.6 12.5 32.1 57.4 40.4 40.4
    TH3> LDD: 44.6 12.6 32 70.2 49.3 49.3
    TH3> LDD: 44.6 12.6 32 83 57.5 57.5
  3. If only the second column is reading lower than expected, go to step 5. If the second and third columns are both significantly lower than the first column, go to step 4.
  4. In this case the source of the failure is likely one or both of the laser diodes. Try to determine the source of the error and get the customer temporarily running:
    1. Type the commands:
      TH3 > ldd on a 15
      TH3 > ldd info

Note the value for Laser Current A
    2. Then type the commands:
      TH3 > ldd on b 15
      TH3 > ldd info

Note the value for Laser Current B
    3. Compare the two laser current values.
      • If one laser is drawing more power than the other, disable that laser. To get the customer temporarily running, reduce the drum speed and power.
      • If both lasers are drawing low current, lower the drum speed and lower the power.
    4. Escalate to the Response Center.
  5. In the case where only the second column is reading lower than expected, the cause is likely a failure of one of the LV driver boards. Determine which board has failed:
    1. Type the command:
      TH3 > lvd linearity lvbias
      See the sample readout below.
    2. Determine which driver board has failed (high or low polarity). Reconfigure the polarity to the one that has not failed. Type the command:
      set sys polarity parameter X
where X = 0 (high polarity) or 1 (low polarity)
    3. Type the commands:
      TH3> reset
      TH3> laser on

and confirm that the LDD values are correct.
    4. Disable laser annealing. Type the command:
      TH3> set sys laseranneal false
      *** Command Success ***

Caution: If you do not disable laser annealing the LV may fail prematurely.

Example for step 5,a

In this example, the high polarity driver board has failed.

TH3> LVD: Polarity=High, Slope= 0.014, Intercept= 1.466, Result=Fail
TH3> LVD: LVBIAS High-Side Test Result=Fail
TH3> [05815] Light Valve: The diagnostic function has failed
TH3> *** Command Failure ***
