Service Shell client fails to connect Service Host via RSS connection

Product

  • Service Shell 2.4
  • Service Shell 2.5

Symptoms

Only an RCMD (remote command server) and/or RCTP (remote CTP server) connection are set up. Typically the RCTP connection does not work.

Cause

RSS is a communication relay server, so it adds a delay in network response as packets get routed from one network to another. On some networks (depending on the workstation connection and RSS), the delay exceeds the connection timeout in the Service Shell and Service Host connection API, referred to as QCON. The default timeout of this layer is 5 sec.

Solution

The default timeout was changed starting with Service Shell 2.5 SP1 to handle this problem.

Users can either upgrade to Service Shell 2.5 SP2
or do the following:

  1. Search under \Service Shell\Bin for file QCON.INI.
    If the file does not exist, create it.
  2. Shut down Service Shell client.
  3. Add the text below to the QCON.INI file:
    [QCON]
    DefaultTimeoutMsecs=20000
  4. Save and close the file.
  5. Start Service Shell client and try to connect.
