Service Shell Client not connecting to device

Product

  Service Shell 2.4, 2.4SP1

Operating system

  • Windows 2000

Symptoms

Note: This only applies to Service Shell versions before 2.4 SP1

Some or all of the following may contribute to the following:

  1. Print Console 2.0.X.X versions are installed.
  2. Service Shell was installed after Print Console
  3. Service Shell was correctly installed with Print Console version 2.1 or higher but was uninstalled and reinstalled.

Cause

For systems with versions of Print Console 2.1 or higher either:

  • Print Console was loaded before Service Shell Host. Print Console requires that at least Service Shell Host be installed before the installation of Print Console. During the Print Console installation, the installer program modifies the creo_deviceinfo.ini file for you so that it contains the correct information on the diagnostic port, and the device type.
  • You properly installed Service Shell before Print Console but you then uninstalled Service Shell and reinstalled it. This action deleted the settings for creo_deviceinfo.ini and Service Shell won’t work.

Solution

You need to manually correct the creo_deviceinfo.ini file settings as described below.

For systems with versions of Print Console earlier than 2.1:
It's possible to install early versions of Print Console without Service Shell. These versions of Print Console do not modify the creo_deviceinfo.ini file. This must be done manually by:

  1. Close the Service Shell Client and Service Shell Host Applications.
  2. For all CTPs except TS NEWS 200 (see 3 below) and ThermoFlex (see 4 below):
    • Locate the creo_deviceinfo.ini file in ServiceShell\bin.
    • Open creo_deviceinfo.ini in a text editor like NotePad and make the following changes to creo_deviceinfo.ini.

    Under [deviceinfo]

    • Enter the number of devices number=3 or 4 depending on your device configuration i.e. MPE, 1 MCE, 2 MCE’s (News 200) or Thermoflex device. Notice that device1 and device2 are always the same configuration regardless of the device configuration.
    • device1=WORKSTATION
    • device2=SRVSHELL
    • device3=MPE or MCE
    • device4=MCE2 or TFX (for the second MCE in News 200 or the TFX head in the Thermoflex devices)
    • Uncomment the appropriate line for device=3 depending on whether you have an MPE based system or and MCE based system.
    • Uncomment the appropriate line device=4 depending on whether you have an MCE2 based system or a TFX.

    Under [WORKSTATION], verify

    • Type=WS
    • Number=2
    • rconaddress=0.2.0

    Under [SRVSHELL], verify

    • Type=SVCHOST
    • Number=1
    • rconaddress=0.1.0

If MPE then under [MPE], verify

    • Type=Terminal
    • Number=1
    • Asciichannel=1
    • Monitor=ascii

If MCE then under [MCE], verify

    • Type=MCE
    • Number=1
    • rconaddress=1.0.0
    • Asciichannel=1
    • Monitor=ascii

  3. For ThermoFlex Add the following device at the end of the file:

    • Type=Terminal
    • Number=1
    • Asciichannel=2
    • Monitor=ascii

  4. For all Hydra add the following device at the end of the file:

    • Type=MCE
    • Number=2
    • rconaddress=1.0.0
    • Asciichannel=2
    • Monitor=ascii

  5. Start Regedit and edit the registry settings as follows:

  6. For MPE:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE|Creo\ServiceShell\AsciiPort1
    • BaudRate= 9600
    • Port= COM4
    For MCE:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE|Creo\ServiceShell\AsciiPort1
    • BaudRate= 9600
    • Port= COM4

    57600 for MCE)

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE|Creo\ServiceShell\AsciiPort2
    • BaudRate= (normally 57600 for MCE and 115200 for TFX)
    • Port= COM5

  7. Start Service Shell Host and then launch Service Shell Client. In the Service Shell Client menu bar under properties confirm that the correct port and baud rates are displayed.
