Service Shell 2.5.x fails to open in Windows NT

Product

Service Shell 2.5.x

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows® NT 4.0

Error

The following error message appears: Unable to locate the function "SHGetSpecialFolderPath"

Symptoms

The error message indicates that there is a missing function.

Cause

This is a Service Shell client issue with Active Desktop in Windows NT 4.0 (PR6759). Some Service Shell client subsystem functions call shell32.dll version 4.72 or later in Windows NT 4.0 running Internet Explore 4.0 or later. If you did not select Active Desktop when installing Internet Explorer, shell32.dll was not updated. If the file update was not installed, the system continues to use the original shell32.dll (version 4) that was installed with Windows NT.

Solution

Important Note: Upgrading to Service Pack 6a or 7.0 has no effect.

To resolve this problem:

  1. Upgrade Internet Explorer to IE6 SP1.
  2. Search for the folder where the file, ie6setup.exe, is stored.
  3. Using Command Prompt, open that folder and type: ie6setup.exe /c:”ie6wzd /e:ie4shell_ntx86 /i:y”
This opens Internet Explorer in wizard mode.
  4. Follow the wizard instructions to upgrade IE Tools and Active Desktop.
