TCP/IP port conflicts: Service Shell, Print Console, or PSRM do not operate properly

Product

  • Service Shell 2.6 and 3.0
  • Print Console 4
  • PSRM

Operating system

Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP

Error

The application log shows a failed TCP/IP Socket connection with a specific port number. For example: 76201 SwCode: c1250004 Source: CDI Unable to setup connection watchdog link to server process on hw01448 port 3007.

Symptoms

You are unable to communicate with a GMCE output device using Service Shell Client. The only entries on the Device Tree are RCTP and RCMD. The srvshellsw.log shows the message 76201 SwCode: c1250004 Source: CDI Unable to setup connection watchdog link to server process on hw01448 port 3007. This error indicates a potential port conflict between Service Shell and another application.

Cause

These conflicts generally occur because one of the applications has a hard-coded port number and cannot proceed if it does not get that specific port number.

Solution

To determine which application has the hard-coded port:

  1. Download the TCPView application to the customer workstation.
  2. Run TCPView and search for the hard-coded port number. The application name will appear next to the port number.

To resolve the problem:

  1. Close both of the affected applications.
  2. Start the application that failed first.
  3. Start the second (offending) application. If both applications start correctly, the problem is resolved.
  4. If the problem still exists, see TCP/IP Port Allocation and Configuration GMCE. This document shows port numbers, the applications that use them, and an alternate way to configure what port the application will use.
