Ripro Backup (Legato)

Recovering the Bad Legato DLT Tape

Lev Weissman
July 12, 1999

This procedure is to be used only in cases when the tape is getting the first block surface errors - meaning it is completely unreadable.

  1. Load the tape, make it appendable, write a small file to it using the save command.
  2. Run dd command on the first blocks to destroy directory header:

    #dd if=/dev/rmt3 of=/dev/null bs=300k

(reading the first block by dd command actually destroys it)

  3. When you then unmount the dlt tape from Legato, Legato will recreate the directory on the DLT tape.
