Ripro Backup (Legato)

Daily Full Index backup

Thomas Metzeler
February 9, 2000

Problem:

After the loss of Legato indexes, recover can only be done from the last full backup.

Explanation:

Legato indexes are backed up at the end of any automatic scheduled backup, but only with the corresponding level (incremental or full).

In case of necessary recovery after a disaster it is useful to be able to recover from a daily full index backup, without the need of a daily full data backup.

Workaround:

Use the following procedure to create a NetWorker configuration that allows to daily, automatically full backup the index on a separate tape.

NetWorker Configuration to backup the indexes daily to a separate pool and cassette (Requires additional casette available).

This procedure will create a new pool, label template, group, schedule and client,

that daily automatic back’s up (full) the index directory to a different tape than the

scheduled backup. This allows, in case of disaster, to retrieve indexes from this

specific tape from any previous day (up to 20 years if desired)

  1. Launch nwadmin
  2. Select Customize =>
    Label Template =>
    Create =>
    Name = Index =>
    Fields = Index => add
    Fields = 001-999 => add
    Separator: . (Select the dot) => Apply
    Leave the “next” field empty
    Apply =>
    File => Exit.
    The “next” field should show: “Index.001”
  3. Select Customize =>
    Group =>
    Create =>
    Name = Index =>
    Autostart = Enable =>
    Start Time = 02:00 =>
    NOTE: Choose a time that does not clash with the autostart for the default
    groups or onbar, ( a 2 GB index backup will take about 5 minutes on DLT7000)
    Apply =>
    File => Exit.
  4. Select Customize =>
    Schedule =>
    Create =>
    Name => Index =>
    Select Full for every day =>
    Apply =>
    File => Exit.

    Directive Index directives
    Group Index
    Saveset /nsr/res (delete ALL)
    NOTE: We use a dummy backup of nsr/res to have the bootstrap automatically saved.
    The directive is used to copy the holly index structure properly on the tape
  7. Label a new tape, choose Pool => Index
    Select Manual recycle

Run Index Backup manually

Select Server => Group Control => Index => Start

Check the bootstrap info.

How to restore

Normal mmrecov procedure can be applied from this Index pool.

NOTE: The bootstrap info is saved automatically when a scheduled backup is launched, but always with the level of the backup (incr or full). Print the Bootstrap information daily from the mail for user backup (See Legato Backup guide for details).
The bootstrap info is required to restore the index via mmrecov from the index pool.
