Illegal Mac File Names

Applies to

Mac OS and Microsoft Windows NT

Symptoms

Illegal Mac file names are not really illegal on Macs. They are valid Macintosh file names that would be illegal Windows NT (NTFS) file names.

To prevent the Mac file names from being illegal Windows NT file names, Services for Macintosh (SFM, MacFile) translates the Mac file names to strange, but legal, NTFS file names. These strange looking Mac file names are referred to as illegal Mac file names.

Examples of illegal Mac file names include any Mac file names containing the following characters:

/ (forward slash)

\ (back slash)

? (question mark)

* (asterisk)

< (less than sign)

> (greater than sign)

| (vertical bar, pipe, the or symbol)

Other illegal characters may exist that aren't recorded here.

Solutions

When naming files, do not use the illegal characters listed in the Symptoms section of this troubleshooting item.
