A 4-port card is used to decrease network traffic in the main network backbone of a
PlateMaster configuration by creating back-to-back network connections (100bT) and
redirecting the communication between the PlateMaster and the Creo Satellites through this
dedicated network.
The Packet Engines G-NIC II Network Interface Card has been qualified for the Gigabit
Ethernet. Gigabit technology can offer substantial increases in network performance and is
a robust substitution for 4 port cards. With the industry movement towards faster CPUs and
rapid network technologies, customers wanting to establish network systems should be
advised to purchase switches that can support Gigabit technology. Network performance
tests of the Gigabit card show changes in performance that are dependent on the platform
used. As network speed increases, the amount of power dedicated to network processing
increases exponentially, impacting the ability of the system to serve both the network and
running applications. Older platforms with lower processing power may not adequately
support Gigabit technology.
The Fast LAN Card can be one of the following. Note that all are available for Intel and Alpha platforms.
