Site Planning Workflow
Network Environment - General Information

Star Topology

The communication network should be planned as a star topology. Star topology aims to connect all the network users in to one or more communication racks.

A customer site is characterized by its communication network, which enables connectivity between the users of different platforms through the communication centres.

Advantage and Disadvantages using star topology

Advantages:

  • Easy to maintain.
  • When a communication fault occurs between one of the stations and the communication device, this does not interfere with the communications of other stations. The network is always kept in operation, only the specific port on the communication device is disconnected from the network.
  • Network problems solved easily (time saving).
  • All users devices (Macs, Whispers, PS/2,etc.) are connected to one or more communications racks.

Disadvantages:

  • This topology requires :
    • Installing a separate infrastructure cable for each user.
    • Using dedicated port on a switching hub.
  • More expensive as compared to 10Base-2.

General Site Requirements

The site should include one or more communication racks that will house all the communication devices that are used on - site. This depends on the number of users, and their location according to buildings and floors.

It is necessary to order two telephone lines for the Ripro Server, one line that is modem dedicated, for site support from a remote station.

The second telephone line should be for regular voice communications.

For large sites that include 50 users or more, it is recommended to plan a communication room for all the communication devices and for the different servers (Ripro Server , Mac Server, Novell Server etc) and other peripheral devices.

NOTE: This communication room must also be accessable to operators needing to handle the peripheral devices.
