Infastructure - FDDI
Fiber Distributed Data Interface
(FDDI) is a standards-based solution that provides faster
and more reliable data transfer on a local area network
(LAN). Its sophisticated technology, which supports data
transfer of 100 million bits per second (100 Mbps), was
developed by the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI). FDDI's unique capabilities have made it the
technology of choice for high-speed networking
applications.
Earlier LANs, such as Ethernet and
Token Ring, can no longer meet all of today's growing
network demands. These demands, such as increased
throughput, greater network size, improved reliability,
and superior fault tolerance, have surfaced because
computing environments are becoming more powerful and
data-intensive.
Here are some facts about FDDI:
- FDDI uses optical fiber as its
transmission medium, providing security.
- Low signal loss, and high
bandwidth data communication.
- FDDI can support simultaneous
connection of over 500 nodes on a ring.
- With up to two kilometers
between adjacent nodes, and up to 200 kilometers
of total fiber length.
- FDDI uses a token passing
protocol for access to the network.
The fiber optic cable installed in
the site must conform to the American National Standard
FDDI PHYSICAL LAYER MEDIUM DEPENDENT Standard,
ISO.166-1990.
Scitex Whisper workstations should
be connected through FDDI single attach concentrators
.The Ethernet network is supported by Switching Hubs
which connect all workstations with 10Base-T
connectivity. It is impossible to install both an
Ethernet LANC board and a FDDI board on the same Scitex
workstation.
