Network Environment - UPS System

Overview

The UPS system is intended to protect sensitive devices from power cuts, transient voltage , spikes or other electrical disturbances.

The UPS system should be connected to the network communication devices (communication rack), the Ripro Server and/or other servers.

The UPS should not be connected to the air-conditioning system or to any other non-essential equipment. The UPS must be connected to a separate power line in the electricity cabinet, with no other instruments connected to it.

The UPS should be suitable to protect computer equipment.

The UPS system should be able to provide backup power to the communication rack or room for 20-30 minutes.

Scitex recommends using an ON-LINE UPS type, 1KVA-5KVA (conditional on the number of devices attached to the UPS) in the communication rack and/or room.

Components

The UPS system comprises:

  • Rectifier charger - receives the net voltage and releases straight voltage.
  • Inverter - receive straight voltage and releases frequent voltage.
  • Battery - stores energy and supplies it to the inverter when required.
  • Static switch - switches the connection from the electricity net and the inverter.

It is recommended to use a clogged battery type inside the UPS.

Do not load the UPS more than 70 % of the nominal load.

The recommended temperature around the UPS should not be more than 25°C.

Around 8°C above the UPS data sheet recommended temperature, can reduce the UPS life time to 50%.

It is recommended to install a UPS unit equipped with a RS-232 module in order to automatically initiate the Ripro Server shutdown procedure, in the case of a power cut/failure of more than 20 minutes. The UPS connects to the Ripro Server with a standard RS-232 cable.

The Ripro Server can be released with an "ONEAC" UPS.

Configurations

There are two possible UPS configurations.

  1. If the Ripro Server and the RiproStorage are not located next to the communication rack, it is recommended to use two separate UPS, one connected to the Ripro Server and the second connected to the communication devices located inside the communication room or near the communication rack.
  2. If the Ripro Server and the RiproStorage are located next to the communication rack, Scitex recommends using only one UPS for both the Ripro Server and for the communication rack. (For this configuration it will be necessary to enlarge the capacity of the UPS)

For Example:
To calculate the required UPS capacity, for the communication rack and/or room - use the power consumption specifications for each device and calculate the total power consumption of all the operating devices in the communication room and/or rack at the site.

UPS power consumption calculation for an average site is as follows:
The communication devices which are installed in the communication room or in the communication rack are as follows:

The required UPS is calculated using

For future expansion and for ensuring that the UPS is not more than 70% loaded add 30%.

1.5KVA + 30% (1.5KVA) = 2KVA.

An additional 20% capacity may be added to the total power consumption for future expansion.

For a communication room with the above-mentioned equipment a 24000BTU air conditioning unit is required (taking into consideration people walking in and out of the room).

If the communication rack is located in an open work space environment the appropriate capacity for the air conditioning must also take into account the additional power consumption of the equipment in the room.

Scitex recommends using an on-line model UPS (in preference to a change-over type), in order to back up equipment in the communication room against transient voltage and electrical disturbances. In addition, it will also provide 20 minutes backup in case of long power failures.
