SUN - TCP/IP, NFS
Hardware
Installation
The Unda workstation comes by
default with an Ethernet interface and a coaxial
transceiver. No additional H/W is needed in order to
connect the UNDA to the TCP/IP network, unless the
cabling is of different type than coax - Thin Ethernet,
for example - 10BaseT.
Unda 4.1 SPARCstation 10 hardware
has a built-in 10BaseT connector and a 10BaseT connector
cable is included.
Software
Installation
The SUN Operating System which is
installed on the UNDA station needs no additional S/W in
order to communicate to a TCP/IP network.
Setup and configuration of the
TCP/IP network is done individually on each work station.
The configuration is different on each platform, and must
be carried according to instructions, so all the
computers on the network can communicate.
At the end of installation, be sure
to remember to backup the configuration onto a diskette .
Important UNDA
Files for Installation & Configuration
There are a few very important
files in each computer. On the UNDA these files include:
* /etc/exports - should include the
line: /export/fs1 so it can be shared with the other
computers.
* /etc/hosts - should contain the
host names of the remote workstations.
Configure TCP/IP
In order to communicate to other
computers on the TCP/IP network, we need to update a few
files in the UNDA workstation. Here we will give a sample
of adding a Macintosh computer to the network. In order
to add a PS/2 computer, or any other TCP/IP host, use the
same procedure.
Proceed as follows:
- Login as Superuser (root), and
open a Unix window.
- Change to the program
directory and run the ./Install script:
- unda(root)2: cd $GDW_PROGDIR
- unda(root)3: ./Install
Type <return> to all
questions of the script until you reach:
- Do you want to add a Mac to
the network [y/n] (n) y
- Enter hostname of Mac:
(default mac) <Return>
NOTE: Although you may choose the default, it
is a good practice to give meaningful names to the
various stations.
- Enter Internet address of mac
(default 192.9.200.100)<Return>
NOTE: The address number above should be the
same address as the address that was assigned to the
Macintosh. To avoid confusion, consult the system
manager.
- Mac host mac is added.
- Do you want to add another Mac
to the network [y/n] (n)
- When the installation script
prompts if another Mac should be added to the
system, the answer will depend on whether your
configuration has additional Macintoshes or not.
If there are more Macintoshes in the network, add
their hostnames and Internet addresses here. If
no other Macintoshes are being added to the
network, press <Return> to accept n (No) as
the default.
- The installation script will
continue to ask configuration questions. Keep
pressing the <Return> key until the
following prompt appears:
Are you sure you want to install [y/n] ? y
Cross Mounting
between Unda and PS/2
It is preferrable to mount Unda
disk over the PS/2 job/page directory, because reading
over the network is twice as fast as writing. (Writing is
verified by reading what was written). Writing to a local
file in Unda is faster than any network activity. Usually
it is easier to obtain more disk space for spool
directories on the Unda than on the PS/2.
Mounting the UNDA
directory over PS/2 job/page
Setting on PS/2
- From Scitex application click
on "Device" and look in the list for
"disk1", if it exist select it. If it
is not on the list you have to go first to
SCIUTIL and to add "disk1" as second
user disk.
- From Scitex application create
new JOB/PAGE under "disk1".
For example: JOB: Unda PAGE: Hi-Res
(Unda.j/Hi-Res.p).
- Select "open AIX
window" option.
- At AIX window UNIX prompt,
enter super user mode by typing " su "
and pressing <Enter>. At the prompt
passward:, type: rootxx and press <Enter>.
- Type mv
/u/d1/jobs/Unda.j/Hi-Res.p/.rfs /tmp and press
<Enter>.
(note: There is a space before "/tmp")
- Type
mount -o rw,soft unda:/usr/images
/u/d1/jobs/Unda.j/Hi-Res.p and press
<Enter>.
Where:
unda is the UNDA host name.
/usr/images is the UNDA high res images
directory.
- Type mv /tmp/.rfs
/u/d1/jobs/Unda.j/Hi-Res.p and press
<Enter>.
- Type exit twice to return to
Scitex application.
- Add this JOB/PAGE
(Unda/Hi-Res) to APR path.
NOTE: The .rfs file is actually moved to the
UNDA directory and it is very important to keep it
there. This file includes the path to the PS/2
JOB/PAGE. If we want to mount this UNDA directory
again it must be mounted over the same initial
JOB/PAGE !
Setting on UNDA
- Login as superuser, type: root
and press <Enter>.
- Type vi /etc/exports and press
<Enter>.
- Add the line: /usr/images to
the file.
- Save and exit.
- Type logout and press
<Enter>.
Setting up and
Mounting PS/2 job/page over UNDA directory
:
It is recommended to mount the Unda over the PS/2 &
define it in the APR Path.
Mounting the PS/2 over UNDA is not
a good practice and is not recommended. However, if the
customer insists, below are the directions:
In order to mount the PS/2 job/page
over the Unda directory we need to configure the
directory to be mounted. This is done in the following
way:
- Login as superuser (root).
- Type vi /etc/fstab.
- Add the line:
PS:/u/d0/jobs/unda.j/hires.p
/export/home/ps nfs
bg,rw,soft,retry=1,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 0 0
where:
PS is the name of the PS station in the /etc/hosts
file.
/user/d0 is the directory in the foreign system used
as a mounting point.
- Type :
rm /export/home/ps
mkdir /export/home/ps
- Type mount -a to mount the
file system.
NOTE: After the line in step 3 above has been
added to the system, the command in step 5 above is
automatically performed when the system is booted.
