Ethernet - PS/2 Troubleshooting

Failure at System Boot

At system boot, the computer attempts to download firmware to the LANC board. If the download fails, the following message appears:

LAN startup failed, hardware problems.

Check the following:

  • Is the board configured ? (run Config from the Scitex-IBM- Reference diskette)
  • Check if LED #2 is ON (if not run Configuration)
  • Is the LANC board faulty ? (run diagnostics to check)
  • Is LED #l ON ? (replace the board)

Failure in Communication

If an error is discovered during communication, the system displays the error number and its meaning.

Check the following:

  • Is the communication cable connected to the appropriate connector ?
Check that the appropriate LED is ON (Ethernet or Cheapernet).
  • Is system configuration correct ? (Subnet Name, Logical Name, etc.)
  • Is the transceiver connected properly (for Ethernet only) ?
  • Run diag to check the LANC board.
  • Check LEDs #3 or #4, according to the line connected, to verify that you are connected to the link.
    (See the following table:)

LANC On-Board LEDs Table

LED Status Mnemonics Operation
LED 1 On DG2 Diagnostics
LED 2 On CEN Card enable
LED 3 On ETR Ethernet
LED 4 On CPR Cheapernet
LED 5 On CDT Collision detect
LED 6 On CRS Carrier sense
LED 7 On RXD Receive data
LED 8 On TXD Transmit data
LED 9 On DG1 Diagnostics

I/O address range: EC00
Interrupt level: 10
Arbitration level: 13

Understanding LANC Board LED Indications

NOTE:
During power on, all LEDs (except #3:Ethernet) are off.

LED #9 turns on immediately after power on (during boot diagnostics), and turns off immediately after its completion

Situation LEDs Explanation
#1. Data transmit 6,7,8 Flicker during transmission
#2. Data receive 6,7 Flicker when there is any activity on the network, even when your station is quiet
#3. Heavy activity 5 Flickers occasionally. If flickering is frequent, the network is overloaded and transmission is severely impaired. This may appear with situation #l or #2.
#4. Ethernet 3 Lit when connected to the Ethernet, or if there is a faulty network connection
#5. Thin Ethernet 4 Lit when connected to Thin Ethernet
#6. Diagnostics 9 Lit when system checks the LANC board
#7. Diagnostics 1 Lit when LANC board EPROMs are not loaded
